Slate Roofs

Roofing guide

Slate Roofs

Slate roofing uses thin overlapping slates fixed to battens to create a durable, low-absorption weatherproof covering. Natural slate is highly durable; fibre-cement alternatives can provide a consistent appearance at lower weight.

How it works

Each slate overlaps the courses beneath it, creating headlap and sidelap that prevent wind-driven rain reaching the membrane. Correct gauge, fixing, pitch and detailing are essential.

Important: The right specification depends on the property, roof pitch, exposure, structure and existing roof condition. A site inspection is the best way to confirm the correct system.

Main benefits

✓Elegant, traditional appearance
✓Low water absorption

What affects the lifespan of a roof?

Material quality matters, but installation and detailing are equally important. Roof pitch, wind exposure, ventilation, drainage, fixings, junction details and routine maintenance all influence how a roof performs over time.

Signs you may need an inspection

  • Recurring leaks or damp marks
  • Slipped, cracked or missing tiles or slates
  • Daylight visible through the roof space
  • Deteriorated flashing around chimneys or walls
  • Sagging areas or uneven roof lines
  • Persistent moss combined with damaged coverings
  • Blocked or overflowing rainwater systems
